smudge eye dolls...

I can't remember what these parasol toting big-eyed dolls are called, but I remember thinking that they were pretty fancy when I was little. A lot of girls I knew had them perfectly placed on their dresser or bedroom bookshelf. My friends, sisters Jeneka and Rebecca did too, but not until after they had victimized them. One year Rebecca licked her thumb to get something off her new doll's eye area and found that a wet thumb would smear the dolls' eyes. A happy accident for her, she found the action oddly satisfying. Soon, their entire collection of petticoat pretties had been turned into smudge eyed zombies.

I'm not really sure why, but their parents and other relatives kept giving them the dolls as gifts. Maybe they didn't notice that the perimeter of the girls' bedroom was lined with dainty mutants? Jeneka and Rebecca would try to refrain, but they could never wait more than an hour or two before they would look at each other and pop their thumbs in their mouths.

mute pen by caitlin shearer...

I love this new drawing by Australian artist, Caitlin Shearer. She has so many prints that I hem and haw over her prints on Etsy, but I would really love to have an original piece someday.

"Mute swans have sharp vision and hearing & the name for a female swan is pen."

pretty apple by the sea...

I forgot to post this photo of a cute motel on the way to the ocean a few weeks ago. This is the Red Apple Inn in Tillamook, Oregon. We didn't stay here, I just love the sign.

independence day lovelies...

Two of my favorite people in the world on July 4 in PDX, Jasmine Deatherage Garcia and Sarah Paul Ocampo. They are two of the most inspiring and supportive eggers-on in my life. Hanging out with them always makes me feel like I could do anything in the world and be successful. Friends 4 Ever. XO

his & hers waffles at the pdx waffle window

They sell $4 magic at The Waffle Window off of Hawthorne on 36th.

Photobucket

Hers: Nectarines gussied up with lavender syrup are hiding under clouds of lemon panna cotta and fresh whipped cream. Then just to push it a little more over the top, it gets dotted with fresh raspberries and lavender petals. Seriously... $4. This could get the most hardcore shut-ins out and about! Someone should phone Salinger.

His: BBB. Bacon, Brie & Basil. I don't eat meat, so I don't have a whole lot to say about this one. There is a vegetarian savory option that I'm looking forward to tasting though!

There are so many delicious waffles... as I was deliriously savoring each bite of my waffle, I nearly stuck my foot out to trip a child walking past with a chocolate coated number that I suddenly needed.

slavic misfit...

It took me nearly a year, but I finally snapped a photo of this Portland sign that I love. It isn't particularly pretty or even the standard attention grabbing, old timey kitsch sign design... I find the elements of this to be a little surreal. It is on a busy street on the way to my favorite Vietnamese restaurant and I always look forward to seeing it as I drive past. I like to wonder about what the location looked like when it was built in the 1960's. Before it was a misfit church sign, it had a much more glamorous life as a part of Eastgate movie theatre. Slavic Church Emmanuel, you are so mysterious.

i found you sweet and bold...

I'm so into yellow roses right now! I wish I could find some nice vintage cotton fabric with bright yellow, greens and aqua tones to make some curtains. There is a perfect pair in the movie Amelie that I daydream about... I wish I could curl up in the minds of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marie-Laure Valla.

Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast is so amazing. This last weekend there were jellyfish landmines at the far end of the beach... literally the size of sombreros! I am so happy by the sea.

Petite Provence has cream puffs made to look like swans. If I had been 6 years old - I would have fainted. Sigh.
The French really do make life bearable. Oui?

vivienne's stockings...

i love these vivienne westwood cut-off stockings... not a natural fiber for as far as the eye can see, but super cute with low-tops... and i'm thinking probably pretty sexy with simple heels... the blue and cream feels a little nautical♥ and definitely a chic take on the traditional gym sock. i wish i owned them... i would have better visuals...

last night, over cava and cupcakes, the ladies made a pact to warn each other before it gets to the point when the raccoons move in... but, maybe not before the sweater turban? almost every girl i know (and can relate to) can relate in some way to little edie. as a kindred spirit... or a possible marker in the road up ahead...
